The purpose of this contest is to help increase young actors/actress and technicians in their ability along with introducing them to the world of UIL OAP. This will better prepared them as freshmen and will help ease their transition into their high school theatre programs and cultivate talent for those same programs.

THIS WILL BE A VERY GENTLE, KIND AND NURTURING FESTIVAL WHERE THE FOCUS WILL NOT BE ON WINNING
BUT ON THE INDIVIDUAL GROWTH OF EACH ACTOR AND TECHNICIAN.

Critic Judge:  
SCOTT MOHON
has begun his 2nd season as Executive Director for Theatre Victoria having returned to Victoria after 24 years, with a wealth of theatrical, theme park and corporate experience. He recently directed Richard Dresser’s Rounding Third, Tony-nominated actress Kimberly Scott in Neil Simon’s Proposals and the hit summer musical Seussical - all for Theatre Victoria. He also directed the theatre's last two season finales, the female version of The Odd Couple and Our Lady of the Tortilla. He A graduate of Victoria High School, Scott received a BFA from The University of Texas at Austin then went west to work on his MFA at the University of California, Irvine. While in California, he began his long-time working relationship with Tony-nominated director/choreographer, Jeff Calhoun on Broadway at the Bowl at the Hollywood Bowl starring Placido Domingo and How Do You Keep the Music Playing?, starring Mimi Hines with music direction by John McDaniel. Reuniting his collaboration with Calhoun and McDaniel in NYC, he stage managed and understudied the role of Vince Fontaine on Broadway in the Tommy Tune production of GREASE!. Scott has been a theatre professional on Broadway, for theme parks and in regional, dinner and community theatres through out the United States having held the positions of Entertainment Manager for Universal Studios Orlando, Director of Production and Operations for Hey City Theater in Minneapolis, MN, Portland, OR, Cleveland, OH and Salt Lake City, UT; Managing Director for Bloomington Civic Theatre in Bloomington, MN; General Manager for Granbury Opera House in Granbury, TX and Vice President, Operations for Walton Arts Center in Fayetteville, AR.


STAGE/AUDITORIUM (click for more information):

* Large (50’x 35’) fully functional theater
(no fly system). Legs and curtains can be pulled in
   to create a smaller playing area.
* Theater seats 900.
* Theater has new curtains, as of 5/99.
* Theater seats have been reupholstered (9/ 00)
* Loading dock door, at rear of theatre, for easy load in. For low level trucks loading can be   done through the side door of the theatre.
* All curtains pull from the SL wing.
* There will be blue lights backstage for each show.
* Restrooms available on stage (SR wing), in the lobby and near your dressing rooms.
* UIL unit set will be on the back wall of the stage for quick set up. 
 
* Storage for you props, furniture, etc. will be in the theater classroom, which is located directly behind the back wall of the stage.


SOUND: 

*
NEW (11/05) Bose House sound system located in the back of the auditorium, 5 changer c/d and mini c/d, c/d burner, dual tape deck
*The house sound system has the ability to play all of its sources at the same time.
*The House system has four Bose 502 A Panaray Speakers (two on the back wall of the stage and two in front of the stage).
*Bose Bass Module, hung over stage.
*6 Sennheiser over-stage choir mics
*3 Sennheiser wireless hand held mics, 3 Sennheiser body mics, 3 Sennheiser wired hand held mics.
*Each school is welcome to bring you own sound system if the house system does not meet your requirements.

*Headsets for backstage communication, available if needed.


LIGHTS: 

*All light cues will be programmed into light board prior to your site rehearsal, if possible.

*Control area for lights is located at the back of the auditorium.
*The stage will be have 9 light areas, and a blue and red wash (Click for light Plot).

UNIT SET AND STORAGE:

Industrial High School will provide the standard UIL set.  Door and window unit, and French door are available.
   new  UIL unit set as of 10/03 Storage space is not very limited.  You will be able to move your props and furniture back to the storage area after your performance.


DRESSING ROOM:

*All schools will have a private lockable dressing room.


REHEARSAL:  
Since this in not an official UIL Contest (only a festival) we will be having two hour rehearsals that can be held during the school day.  You may only use one hour if you would like to give your kids more of the high school experience. There will only be two spots open to rehearse (at 1.5 hours) on the day of the contest, please try and schedule your rehearsal on days prior to the contest saving those two rehearsal times for school that might not be able to make two trips to Vanderbilt.  Depending on how many plays we have this year there might be time for more than two rehearsals the day of the contest.

*Set up time will not start until all of your things have been moved to the center of the stage. Set up time will stop when all items are relocated back in the center of the stage. You will then be able to move your things back to storage and or back to your dressing room.  


DIRECTOR'S MEETING:

1:00 PM - Meeting with the contest director and judge.  (the director's meeting might be later if more school need to rehearse the morning of the contest.


PERFORMANCE ORDER:

Order of performance will be selected by a draw. Plays will run back to back. Order will be determined by a draw. The first play will start at:

(it is very possible that we will be running ahead of schedule because some plays are shorter than others or behind if some plays are too long --
WE WILL RUN THE PLAYS BACK TO BACK AND NOT ON THE HOUR) Please tell your parents to be sure and arrive early.  WE WILL LET LATECOMERS IN DURING A SHOW.


AWARDS CREW:
The award ceremony will take place as soon as the judge is ready, after the last play -- a more exact time will be given when we know how many plays will be at this year's festival.

List of awards:
1. Each play will be awarded a plaque with a rating of Superior, Excellent or Outstanding.
2. medals for best actor and actress
3. medals for all star cast (2 per school)
4. medals for all star cast honorable mention (2 per school)
5. medals for most improved actor/actress ( 1 from each school) 
6. medals for outstanding technical student (1 from each school) 


SITE CREW:
A site crew made up of Industrial H.S. Theatre students (and theatre students from your high school, if you choose to bring any) will be on hand to offer technical assistance.  Light board and sound will be operated by a competing school’s stage crew.  Students from each school's crew will operate the curtain backstage.  If the site crew pulls a school's curtain or does any other technical operation a member of the cast or crew must give vocal instruction on every detail of the cue (s).

 


FOOD:
Cobra Corner Menu - The Cobra Corner Store and Grill has put together sever meal deals for our festival.  If ordering food from Cobra Corner, please submit your order before the day of the contest and be sure to let  them know when to have your food ready for you on Saturday.
