The Cobra Band entered it's concert band selections into the OPS contest this spring. The Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA) Honor Band (1A, 2A & 4A this year) contest and the Association of Texas Small School Bands (ATSSB) Outstanding Performance Series (OPS).
This is a state year for Honor band for AA Schools, so we submited our UIL Contest recording to TMEA. That recording advanced from Region to Area and then on to State. The state contest was held in San Antonio, on July 23rd. Mr. Henry was there to listen to all the competition recordings.
In OPS, the Cobra Band has advanced from Region to Area to State on two recordings. The march "El Gato Salvaje" finished first at Area, and "Salvation is Created" finished 3rd at Area. The State OPS contest is the same day as the honor band contest.
The TMEA Honor Band contests is a state wide concert contest. Any band who's director is a member of TMEA may submit a recording of their entire contest performance for Honor Band. The CD's submitted first go through a Regional contest. Three advance from Region to Area. Three advance from Area to State.
At the State level, the bands are ranked by a panel of 5 judges. This is the same process that is used at Regional and Area. After the bands are ranked, the band with the first place ranking at State is labeled the TMEA 2008 Honor Band. The winner of this prestigious award will perform at the State Convention in February in front of literally thousands of music educators across the state. The Cobra band has won this prestigious state championship award on four previous occasions. (1962, 1980, 1988, 1998).
The ATSSB OPS contest is much like the TMEA honor band contest with 2 large differences. The first being that any director can submit any one, two or all three selections from contest. The second difference is that the winner of the OPS contest will not perform at the convention. The winner will have their recording published a CD that is sold to the public.
Both of these contests are state level and recognized honors. The final state ranking was held at the Texas Bandmasters Association (TBA) convention on Saturday, July 23, 2011.
